How to Move from Tally to Zoho Books: A Step-by-Step Guide

By Vaisakh Vigneswaran, M.Com · Published 12 Oct 2026 · Updated 12 Oct 2026

A practical guide to moving your accounts from Tally to Zoho Books: choosing a cut-over date, what to export, the order of imports, and how to check the numbers before you go live.

Why businesses move from Tally to Zoho Books

Tally has served Indian businesses well for decades. The usual reasons for moving are practical: the owner wants to see the books from anywhere, the team works from more than one place, or the accountant is tired of exchanging backup files.

Zoho Books runs in the browser and on mobile, connects to bank feeds, and prepares GST returns and e-invoices from the same books. If you are still deciding, read our Zoho Books vs Tally comparison first. This guide is for businesses that have decided to switch and want to do it without losing data or breaking their GST records.

Step 1: Pick a clean cut-over date

The cut-over date is the day your books move from Tally to Zoho Books. Everything before it stays in Tally as history. Everything after it is recorded in Zoho Books.

The cleanest dates are the start of a financial year (1 April) or the start of a quarter. A month start also works. Avoid moving in the middle of a month, because your GST returns for that month would be split across two systems.

  • Best: 1 April, the start of a new financial year
  • Good: the start of a quarter, after the previous quarter's GST returns are filed
  • Acceptable: the start of any month, once the previous month is closed
  • Avoid: the middle of a month or a busy season

Step 2: Close and export your Tally data

Before exporting, close the period in Tally. Reconcile the bank accounts, clear suspense entries, and agree customer and supplier balances. Problems you carry across are harder to fix later.

Then export these reports from Tally as at the cut-over date. Zoho Books imports data through its own templates, so you will copy the Tally figures into Zoho's sample import files.

  • Trial balance as at the cut-over date
  • List of ledgers (chart of accounts)
  • Customer and supplier masters with GSTIN, address and state
  • Stock summary with quantities and values, if you hold stock
  • Outstanding receivables and payables, bill by bill
  • A full backup of the Tally company data, kept safely

Step 3: Set up Zoho Books before importing

Create the organisation in Zoho Books and set it up before you import anything. Enter the legal name, address, financial year and base currency. Turn on GST, enter your 15-digit GSTIN and the date of registration, and set up your tax rates.

Turn on only the modules you will use, such as inventory, projects or multi-currency. If you track stock, set the inventory start date to match your cut-over date. Set invoice numbering to continue from your last Tally invoice number so your GST series does not break.

Step 4: Import in the right order

The order matters, because later imports depend on earlier ones. Zoho Books gives a sample file for each import. Match your columns to it and fill in every mandatory field.

  • 1. Chart of accounts, then add bank and credit card accounts
  • 2. Customers and suppliers
  • 3. Items, with opening stock if you track inventory
  • 4. Opening balances from the trial balance, dated the cut-over date
  • 5. Open invoices and bills, so outstanding amounts can be collected and paid
  • 6. Any transactions after the cut-over date that were already entered in Tally

Step 5: Check the numbers before you go live

Do not start invoicing until the numbers match. After you enter opening balances, total debits must equal total credits, and the Opening Balance Adjustments account in Zoho Books should be zero.

Then compare Zoho Books with Tally, line by line.

  • Trial balance in Zoho Books matches the Tally trial balance at the cut-over date
  • Each bank balance matches the bank statement
  • Customer and supplier outstanding balances match, bill by bill
  • Stock quantity and value match the Tally stock summary
  • GST input credit and output tax balances match your GST records

Common mistakes to avoid

Most migration problems come from rushing. These are the ones we see most often.

  • Importing dirty data: duplicate customers, unused ledgers and wrong GSTINs move across unless you clean them first
  • Wrong state on customers and suppliers, which leads to the wrong type of GST on invoices
  • Opening balances that do not match the trial balance, leaving an amount in Opening Balance Adjustments
  • Restarting invoice numbers from 1 in the middle of a financial year
  • Running Tally and Zoho Books side by side for months, so neither set of books is complete

Getting help with the move

A small business with clean books can often move in a few days. A business with stock, several GST registrations or years of untidy ledgers usually needs more planning.
